Conference of Peripheral & Maritime Regions (CPMR)

CRPM - Peripheral Maritime Regions in Europe

On 19 - 20 September 2005 CSEP hosted the first workshop of the CPMR Energy Working Group. Click here for a copy of the programme for the 2-day event.

The workshop addressed the following topic:

HOW CAN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RENEWABLES AND REDUCTION IN ENERGY DEMAND BE TAKEN ON BOARD ALONGSIDE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPERATIVES?

In particular the workshop considered questions such as:

- How do regions take on board the development of renewable energy alongside other requirements (economic, social, environmental)?

- How are social and environmental matters balanced against economic decisions? What are the main sources of conflicts? How have these been solved (or not)?

- How can regions influence the demand for energy at the local level?

Forty delegates representing fourteen regions across Europe participated in the workshop, sharing their experience and best practice. The European Commission also participated and used its ManagEnergy information service to record the presentations live on the day. This information can now be accessed at the following website: http://www.managenergy.tv/me_portal/mst/982/index.html

The conclusions from the workshop were adopted with a couple of minor amendments by the CPMR General Assembly and forwarded to the European Commission as CPMR policy recommendations.

The Energy Working Group continued to work on this issue during 2006, holding further workshops in other regions across Europe. This work culminated in an international conference entitled 'Energy for the Periphery' that took place in Navarre, Spain, on 5/6 October 2006.
