Beacon Council in Sustainable Energy
The Beacon Council scheme identifies excellent councils from which other authorities can learn and acknowledges service areas that have a direct impact.
The scheme was launched in 1999 to help recognise excellence in local government and to encourage the dissemination of best practice in service delivery across local government. The scheme provides a successful, positive way of recognising achievement and spreading best practice. It enables authorities to learn from each other.
Beacon Councils have a responsibility to share their experiences, practices and the lessons they have learnt with other local authorities through a national programme of activities supported by the IDeA.
Being identified as a Beacon Council means that a local authority has shown:
- Excellence in a beacon theme
- Good General Performance
- Plans for effective dissemination.
In 2005, Cornwall County Council, Caradon District Council, Carrick District Council, Kerrier District Council, North Cornwall District Council, Penwith District Council, Restormel Borough Council and the Council of the Isles of Scilly were awarded joint Beacon Council Status under the theme of Sustainable Energy. They were the only joint winners of any of the 2005 Beacon Council categories.
In the area of Sustainable Energy, Cornwall has been recognised for a number of initiatives including:
- Working in partnership through the Cornwall Sustainable Energy Partnership.
- Reducing fuel poverty.
- Facilitating joint projects for renewable energy.
- Innovative ways of raising awareness and educating every sector about sustainable energy.
