Marine Renewables Group

Chair: Karen Clowes - Penwith District Council

The Marine Renewables Group was formed in 2004, primarily to assist with the development of the Wave Hub project in Cornwall. In order to provide this assistance, the group will cover both the economic and environmental interventions of offshore electricity generating projects. It also has the ability to appoint ‘task and finish’ working groups to further specific tasks on its behalf.

Marine Renewables Group members include:

  • Government Office South West, the South West Regional Development Agency and Regen SW
  • Marine Energy Technology Specialists and Developers
  • Combined Universities in Cornwall and University of Plymouth
  • Local Stakeholders - Parish and Town Councils, Fishing, surfing and environmental representatives
  • Local Authorities and Cornwall Enterprise

Aims of the Marine Renewables Group:

The above combination of organisations/individuals with appropriate responsibilities and ability to influence decision makers is regarded as the appropriate forum to enable CSEP to:

  • Deliver relevant actions from the Energy Strategy for Cornwall and set new targets/actions.
  • Promote opportunities for wave and tidal projects off the Cornish Coast that have an integrated approach to energy production and maximise the benefits for local communities.
  • Identify and maximise opportunities for research education, manufacturing and maintenance businesses from marine renewables in Cornwall.
  • Assist SWRDA, Regen SW and developers by providing a forum with Local Authorities and other local and regional agencies.
  • Liaise with and, when necessary, prepare relevant reports for the CSEP Jobs and Industry Group in order to maximise demand driven local jobs and industry opportunities.
  • Lobby for appropriate support and an early offshore Strategic Environmental Assessment for Cornwall.
